Learn About the National Talent Search Tests
It is always best to know as much as possible about the test before you take it.
The National Talent Search Examination consists of two tests namely the Mental
Ability Test (MAT) and the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). Each test consists of 90
multiple choice type questions for class VIII and 100 questions for class X. Each
question has four alternatives marked 1,2,3 and 4. However, for class X in MAT
instead of four alternatives, there will be five alternatives. The candidate has to select
one correct answer from the given alternatives and mark its number in the answersheet.
Each correct answer carries one mark. Thus the total score of a candidate in a
test is equal to the number of questions answered correctly by him/her.
To make the candidates acquainted with the questions in the above tests, some
sample questions in each of the two tests are given below. These questions will give
the candidate, a feel of the nature and level of the questions expected in the test. The
answer for each question is provided at the end. The rationale has also been given for
some questions, which will help you to understand the logic of the correct answer.
These sample questions are based on Class VIII level. The students taking
class X examination may also look at these questions for their types. Similar type of
questions can be asked in Class X examination.
Mental Ability Test Items
This test is given to the candidates to judge their power of reasoning, ability to think,
ability to judge, evaluate or discriminate, ability to visualize in the space, spatial
orientation, etc. A variety of questions e.g. analogies, classification, series, pattern
perception, hidden figures, coding-decoding, block assembly, problem solving etc. are
used for this purpose. To acquaint the candidates with such questions, some examples
are given below. The rationale to find the answer to each question is given at the end.
The candidates are advised to try to solve these questions themselves first. Later on,
they may look at the solutions to find their correct answer and the rationale.
Introduction to NTSE
NTSE, conducted by NCERT, is now available only for class VIII students. It is a national level exam
comprising 3 stages. First stage is a written test conducted at state level. Students, short listed
on basis of their performance, go for 2nd stage written test conducted at national level. Third stage is in form
of interview and students qualifying 2nd stage go for interview and
thereafter final selection is made. Generally II round takes place in the month of April or May and III round
takes place in the month of August or September. It is not just the scholarship but
the recognition that matters for the students clearing all the three stages. Even those students, who fail
to qualify the various stages, are immensely benefited by the hard work they put in, while preparing for NTSE in
a sincere manner. It enhances their overall competence level which is reflected in their improved performance at school
level. In absence of a higher goal like NTSE, students do not find enough challenges in their school curriculum and fail

NTSE provides them the right direction and all challenges that they need for a solid foundation for forthcoming challenges
at class VIII level
